Primary and Secondary Headache

What is Primary and Secondary Headache? Headache is a health problem that often happens in our daily lives. Headaches may begin at any point in the head and may include scalp and face, except for the inner part of the head. It’s hard to find people who have never had a headache in their lives. They usually caused by stress, intense work, and insomnia.

Headaches can also sometimes be a symptom of some serious diseases such as brain tumor, brain hemorrhage, aneurysm. Headaches are divided into two categories:  “primary headaches” and”secondary headaches”. While secondary headaches occur due to some diseases, the headaches, which are not caused by any disease, are in the class of primary headaches. In addition, every pain does not have to arise for the same reason. There are different types of headaches such as migraine, tension, and cluster. This article will explain the primary and secondary headaches below:

Primary Headaches

Migraine:

We still don’t know the exact causes of migraine. However, it is thought that genetic and environmental factors cause it. According to the studies, migraine happens as a result of the dilation of blood. A decrease in the levels of the chemical called serotonin can cause migraine. Low level of serotonin signals the trigeminal nerve. And then the trigeminal nerve starts to release the neuropeptide molecule. Therefore, the changes affect blood flow in the brain and migraine happens.

Tension Headache:

Pain in the back of our head and our neck is called tension headache. Stresses on the shoulders, neck, and scalp can cause it. Keeping our heads in the same position; the largest example of this is to sit at the computer for a long time. In addition, other things that cause pain triggering insomnia, excessive effort, skipping meals, teeth grinding, malaise, and sinusitis.

Cluster Headache:

This type of headache is one of the most painful headaches. It may take several months for this pain to recur. This pain that ends in a moment does not manifest itself for several months. Cluster headache is not common, and it is triggered by Brightness, high-altitude, temperature and fatigue.

Secondary Headaches:

Secondary headaches occur due to some diseases. You may complain of headaches for the following reasons;

  • Head and neck injuries
  • Brain vascular diseases
  • Brain nerve diseases
  • Brain diseases
  • Brain tumors
  • Increased brain pressure
  • Brain infections
  • Sinusitis

With a headache, if you have complaints such as visual disturbance, vomiting, confusion, and nausea, you should not neglect to go to the doctor without losing any time. Early diagnosis is important in cases involving secondary headaches.
