In the statement made by Zhao Wang, the team leader of the research conducted at the University of Electronic Science and Technology of China, it was stated that if the plaques covering the arteries are worn, the blood flow to the heart will be blocked. He stated that the new method they developed can be used in the clinical diagnosis of the condition in question and in new treatments. In addition, he emphasized that the artificial intelligence system correctly predicted 80 percent of the cases.

DETECTION OF THE DISEASE WILL BE EASIER

It was said that the breakdown of the plaque in the heart arteries is of great importance, as it is a marker of heart attack and other serious heart diseases. According to the statement, this artificial intelligence technique will use optical coherence tomography (OCT) images to monitor arterial plaque. OCT, one of the optical imaging techniques, will provide 3D pictures of the coronary arteries that carry blood to the heart muscles.

The OCT technique used to detect plaque erosion was challenging due to inter-observer variability in interpretation and the volume of data produced. To solve these problems, scientists introduced the OCT technique to artificial intelligence to identify plaque erosion. This method is not yet available, but studies are underway to further develop it and make it ready for use.
