Genetically modified coli bacillus will detect landmines from afar by glowing like a firefly

Scientist Prof Shimshon Belkin from the Hebrew University of Israel and his team announced that they will start wide-area tests within 3 years in the scientific study of the ‘luminescent coli bacillus’ that will detect the landmine from afar, which they have been working on for about 10 years. Making a statement about the study to News Agency, Prof. Belkin said their goal is to scatter the genetically modified coli bacillus into the suspected mine, glow like a firefly, and locate the mine from afar.

Belkin stated that they took the gene in the bacteria that glow in the sea (Bioluminescence) and cloned it into coli bacillus and designed these bacteria to produce light when sprinkled on land mines.

Stating that they will start large-scale tests of the scientific study within 3 years, Prof. “The main change we made was to clone the luminescence genes from marine luminescent bacteria into coli. “We’ve added a few additional molecular manipulations that help make it stronger and more sensitive. That is, to detect lower concentrations of explosives.”

BLOCKED WITH EXPLOSIVE STEAM

Emphasizing that the genetically modified coli bacillus bacteria are neither beneficial nor harmful to the soil or human beings, Prof. “Land mines cannot be completely sealed, and traces of explosive vapors thus exit the mine body and accumulate in the soil above it. This is why dogs or mice are trained to detect buried mines. (These animals) are not the smell of the mine, but it is on the surface,” said Belkin. Belkin stated that her scientific study aims to spread the genetically modified coli bacilli to an area suspected of being a minefield, and then take aerial photographs a few hours later to detect that the bright spots are mines.
