The study specifically focused on Chinese people. The Chinese are known to move from a traditional diet of grains and vegetables to a more “processed” diet that includes more meat, snacks and eggs.

It is known that the number of people consuming eggs in China doubled between 1991 and 2009. Egg consumption in China increased from 16 grams between 1991-93, to 26 grams in 2000-04, and to 31 grams in 2009. For research, Dr. Li and colleagues analyzed data from 8,545 adults who participated in the China Health and Nutrition Survey from 1991 to 2009. While the egg consumption of the participants was recorded during the study, those who met the criteria were diagnosed with diabetes by measuring their fasting blood glucose in 2009.

How much egg consumption “excess”?

Long-term excess egg consumption (more than 38 grams per day) increased the risk of diabetes in Chinese adults by 25%. It was observed that the risk of diabetes increased by 60% in adults who consumed more than 50 grams, ie approximately 1 egg per day.

It was observed that this effect was more pronounced in women than in men, and women who regularly consumed eggs had a higher risk of developing diabetes. However, it should be kept in mind that this study does not reveal a causal relationship between egg consumption and diabetes.
