What Should Be Done to Reduce the Risk of Heart Attack and Stroke?

Blood is transported from the heart to the brain via two large vessels on both sides of our neck. Stroke occurs like a heart attack. When the blood flow is interrupted, oxygen and nutrients cannot reach the brain. This condition causes damage to the brain tissue and is called a stroke. Depending on the cause, cerebral hemorrhage (cerebral hemorrhage), cerebral thrombosis (congestion in brain vessels) can be used instead of stroke.

Stroke Symptoms: There is a sudden loss of strength in the face, arms, legs, or often in one half of the body. Apart from these, numbness in the same areas, fainting, confusion, difficulty speaking or understanding speech, severe headache of unknown cause, dizziness, inability to balance, loss of vision in one or both eyes, complete loss of consciousness can be seen. Stroke symptoms depend on which part of the brain the event affects and its severity. It can lead to sudden death.

If these findings are mild and improve without any treatment, it is called a transient ischemic attack. Transient ischemic attacks may be harbingers of stroke. Stroke can develop without a transient ischemic attack. When there are signs of stroke, even if it is not very severe, the hospital should be visited as soon as possible.

Prevention of Heart Attack and Stroke: Two-thirds of people who have a heart attack die before reaching the hospital. Sixty percent of stroke patients die or become disabled, even if they reach modern and advanced treatment options. Therefore, it is very important to know the symptoms and act quickly. Prevention is always better than cure. Many heart attacks and strokes are preventable.

To Reduce the Risk of Heart Attack and Stroke;

  • Tobacco and alcohol use should be abandoned.
  • Cigarette smoke should not be exposed.
  • Physical activity should be done for at least 30 minutes a day (such as home, gardening, walking).
  • Fat, sugar and salt should be reduced in the diet.
  • 5 meals a day of vegetables and fruits should be consumed.
