Eye cancer, which is more common in cells that give color to the eye, can also occur in surrounding tissues. Eye cancer is a general name of cancers occurring in the eye and is a rare type of cancer that develops due to the growth of the abnormal cell. There are many types of cancer depending on where it develops. The cause is unknown, but it is more common in people with white skin and colored eyes. Types of eye cancer are melanoma, intraocular lymphoma, retinoblastoma seen in children, lacrimal gland tumor, etc.

Eye cancer, which is one of the most important health problems, is more frequent due to the radiation frequently exposed during the day. And also;

  • A very high level of radiation exposure,
  • Smoking and alcohol consumption,
  • Genetic diseases,
  • Damage to the cells around the eyes due to ultraviolet rays can also cause the appearance of eye cancer.

If the disease is in the first stage, laser treatment is generally preferred. In cases where laser treatment is not sufficient, proton treatment is applied to the patient. In advanced cases, radiotherapy and chemotherapy can be applied.

Eye cancer treatment is planned according to the age, health status, type, stage of cancer. According to these features, surgical treatment, radiotherapy, eye ray treatment (laser), chemotherapy, proton therapy, and cryotherapy are preferred.

  • If tumor tissue is in the eye, laser treatment is preferred in the early stages of cancer.
  • In cases where laser treatment is not sufficient, a newly developed treatment method called proton therapy can be applied.
  • Radiotherapy method is one of the most preferred methods in the treatment of intraocular cancers with low side effects.
  • chemotherapy may also be preferred to suppress the spread and to provide protection in risk situations such as genetic predisposition.

Early diagnosis and treatment should be initiated in order to be able to treat eye cancer and other eye diseases in the most accurate way and to prevent permanent damage such as loss of vision.
